Am Anfang stand ein Zusammenschluss technisch orientierter Verlage: Adolf von Kröner, Inhaber der J. G. Cottaschen Buchhandlung, erwarb 1897 den Architekturverlag Arnold Bergsträsser (Darmstadt), vereinigte ihn mit dem technischen Verlag der Cottaschen Buchhandlung und übergab die beiden Verlage 1898 seinem Sohn Alfred.
