Notes by Chaim Meiselman. notes This is the first printing of the historical-geneological volume Seder ha-Dorot by Jehiel Heilprin of Minsk. The author had died approximately 1746, and the work is posthumous. The title statement describes the printing of the volume by the generosity of a grandson of the author, Arye-Löb b. Eisek of Koidanov (today Dzyarzhynsk, Belarus), who wrote a lengthy introduction. Title note describes the lineage of the author. Translation: the author, his name is known and ascendant ... as Av-Beth-Din of Minsk, in ’Lita’ (reference to the Lithuanian Diaspora), son of Shelomoh, Av-Beth-Din in Shklovv (Shklou, Belarus); grandchild to Mahar.sha.l. (Solomon b. Jehiel Luria, Lublin-Poland, 1510-1573); descendant of "The Light of the Exile", Rashi (Solomon b. Isaac, Troyes-France, 11th century); he descended from ... Jochanan ha-Sandlar (2nd century Judea - Alexandria); descendant of four generations (i.e. great-grandson) to Gamaliel the Elder (leader of the late Sanhedrin, Judea, 1st century). The implication is the lineage of King David (Davidic-Solomonic royal lineage) was counted historically through the aforequoted figures, thus preserving it through eras of Jewish exile. This quote is from the author written to complete the title-author statement but it is missing from the contents of the book, entries Rashi, Gamaliel, and Joḥanan ha-Sandlar, as well as in the lengthy introduction. This work is not the first one of Rabbinic history and historiography, however, it differs from earlier as it follows the Rabbinic pilpul with regard to dates, personas, and historical periods. His sources are from the Talmud, Bible and some of the Apocrypha, and statements of the medieval Tosafists and Maimonides; Sefer ha-Kabalah by Abraham ibn Daud (12th cent.), Yuhasin by Abraham Zacuto, Sifte Yeshenim by Sabbetai Bas, Tsemah-David of David Gunz, and similiar Rabbinic-historical works. Examples of questions: Who was the Mishnaic Tyrannus-Rufus (introd.); What were the true historical personas of the Sabora’im (5th - 8th cents. Iraq); resolving Alexander the Great in the Mishnaic and Talmudic sources; The 10th century "rediscovery" of the ten lost tribes by Eldad ha-Dani (second count, ls. 34-36); Gamaliel’s exile with the Sanhedrin from Jerusalem to Ussa to Yabne (third count, ls. 18-19), and many other historical topics surrounding Judaic-Rabbinic history. Chronogram: ’ט’וב לי ’ת’ורת ’פ’יך ’מ’אלפי זהב וכסף לפ"ק. With a dedication to "Karl Friedrich", i.e. Charles Frederick, Grand Duke of Baden (referred to as Margrave of Baden-Durlach), 1728-1811. Title features fine ornamentation surrounding ordered text block. Ornamentation throughout; angelic figures grace the opening words of the text, illustrating the opening topic of the creation of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.
