All notes by Chaim Meiselman: notes This work follows different names for different parts of the work, as the title statement indicates. The first volume is called ʻAṭeret Rosh, and the second volume called ʻAṭeret Tifʼeret; the two volumes together are called Livyat Ḥen (c.f. Proverbes 1:9). As the author indicates in the title statement, each volume of his writings had a title which referred to a crown (ʻAṭeret Rosh - "crown for the head"; ʻAṭeret Tifʼeret - "crown of splendor, or glory"; Livyat Ḥen - "garland of grace", a ), and the two volumes in this edition were the only works published with eight other volumes remaining unpublished. The opera titulum, or the overarching title of all volumes, is Golat ha-Koteret, i.e. "zenith of crowns". Across the work, there is much prose and poetry to be found; the author, while emphasizing the logical and reasoning in the Talmudic passages (as such traditional novellae), commanded a highly sophisticated Hebrew and Aramaic, which he employs in a poetic fashion. The author was Levi ben David, the Av-Beth-Din, or rabbinical judge, in "Kodni"; this was the Yiddish name for Konitz, a town in Polish Pomerania then under Prussian dominion. Today, it is called Chojnice, and it is between Bydgoszcz and Gdańsk. Haskamot: Saul Lowenstamm in Amsterdam for the Ashkenazic Community; Saul Salem, ibid, for the Spanish-Portugese Community; Isaac Horovitz, elected rabbi of Altona-Hamburg-Wandsbek, signing in Leszno, Poland; Solomon Dov-Ber of Glogau and environs (Głogów, Poland); Saul ha-levi of The Hague; Aryeh-Loeb of Hannover; from the Beth-Din in Berlin; from the rabbinical delegation of Greater Poland: Mosheh-Yehoshu’a ha-levi Horovitz of Hrodno; Shmu’el b. Avigdor of Vilna (Vilnius); Shalom b. Eliezer of Tiktin (Tykocin, Poland); Naftali-Herz of greater Dubno; following this is a lengthy introduction by the author. references Strauss, Berthold, Cat. of the B. Strauss Library, 4377-4378.
