All notes by Chaim Meiselman: Elements of the work are traced to a Medieval Hebraist named Arlotius (b. 1290), with the name of his concordance likely being close to the translation of Me’ir Netiv (’Light of the Path’, alt. ’Pathways’). See Steinschneider, op.cit., entry 1 (for the Bomberg 1523 print.) Being that the quotes and selections are idiomatic and synchronistic to the Rabbinic and scholarly atmosphere of the 16th cent. Italy and Western Europe, this work is representative of one style of Hebraism and reading/writing. It fell out of style later because of its attachment to a single literary instance, and saw its last two printings in 1581 at Basel at the print-house of Ambrosius Froben (Frobiensis). This is far from the intent of the first printers (Bomberg, printing in Venice in 1523). - It may have been segmented to later unrelated Dictionaries and Concordance works. Curiously, neither of the Venice editions of this work have pagination. Printing scheme: Each column is headed by the ’Shoresh’ (i.e. root-word occuring in Hebrew grammar, similar to prefixes) matched to a source in the Bible. The element of text is headed by the larger work being quoted; as an example, a ’Shoresh’ entry begins "ro’a"-"ra’ah" (רוע רעה), and below ’Bereshit’, i.e. Genesis, and below short quotes of that prefix in the order of the verses. This scheme continues in the order of the Pentateuch and then the other books of the Bible, before moving to the next prefix. Steinschneider notes that the printing form of this work is a duplicate of the Venice 1523 ed. printed by Daniel Bomberg. The only difference is that the first edition employed block type-face for the entries of the Concordance and only used Rashi type for the notes and the additional title and colophon statements; the 1564 ed. printed by Alvise Bragadin used bold block for the running titles and names of works to head each column; the rest is in small Rashi typeface. Also, the columns are ordered differently in the two editions. references Benjakob, Otsar Hasefarim, mem 78 (cit. secund.) Steinschneider, M.
