I could not identify the first name of this owner. Can you help? All of the notations in the margins of this volume are of the same type and written in the same hand; they are references to other pages in the Talmud either referred to in Rashi's commentary or in Tosafot without an exact page number. Sometimes these notations are references to parallel sugyot and sometimes they are references to verses in the Tanakh. Clearly this is an early version of a reference tool like "Mesoret HaShas." Indeed, the Bomberg printed edition of the Talmud was the first to standardize page numbers and so comments in Rashi and Tosafot would refer merely to another tractate and the name of the perek without a page number. In later years, attempts were made to create ways to refer to the exact page numbers with greater ease. It is also curious why all of the Bomberg volumes from this set do not have the same notations, leading me to believe that either an owner spent more time studying one tractate over another OR did not own an entire set of the same printed edition of the Talmud. There are no notations in perek chelek, the notations becoming far less frequent beginning in the ninth perek of Sanhedrin. There are no notes in tractate Makkot. Perek Helek has no Tosafot. By comparing different volumes of the same set printed in the first printing of the Talmud by Bomberg we can tell that different had owners studied the Talmud differently, some more interested in creating reference tools as we see here and some more interested in inserting missing material into the commentaries, as we see in Massekhet Bava Batra (1521). Note inscriptions from a previous (?) owner as well.
