This copy of Masekhet Temurah (Berlin and Frankfurt de Odor, 1722) is bound together with Hullin (1721), Arakhin (1722), Bekhorot (1721), Keritot (1721).The bookplate inside this copy informs us that it was owned by Karl Sussheim, an Orientalist and notable scholar, who was born in Nuremberg in 1878 and died in Istanbul in 1947. It appears that when escaping Nazi Germany, Sussheim took his books with him, settling in Istanbul to assume a position at Istanbul University. Sussheim, who escaped Germany with his non-Jewish wife, Karolina Plank, and his two daughters, died in Istanbul in 1947. His wife, upon inheriting his library collection, sold this volume to Yale Univeristy in 1949 to fund her immigration to the United States. She settled in NY and remarried. Although Sussheim did not know Hebrew, he knew Arabic, Persian and Turkish, leaving a diary written in Turkish and Arabic that was translated and reflects his life between 1908 and 1941. See Barbara Flemming Jan Schmidt, The Diary of Karl Sussheim (1878-1947): Orientalist between Munich and Istanbul (Stuttgart: Franz Steiner, 2002).
