TU Rare Book Collections copy 2 (RBR531): Long ink inscription on rear flyleaf. 'היום יום ד בי"ז [ביום ז'] ניסן היינו הולכים מבית האפל לקבל החמה בתקופתה | בשעת הנץ החמה כמבואר בש"ע סימן רכ"ט; בשנת תקע"ג לפ"ק פה | בונפעלד וגם לרבותי אני בתוכו הק` [הקטן] ירוחם ליב סג"ל בראנד'. Translation: Today is Wednesday, the 7th of Nisan, and we walk from 'a dark house' to [greet] the Sun, in its glory, as it is 'in its signature time', at sunrise ... (later explained), as it is clearly written | in [this volume of] Shulhan Arukh section 229; in the year 573 (i.e. 1813), | here in Bonfeld [,] and [here] now I am joining among them [,] Yeruḥam Löb Sega"l (i.e. a Levite) Brändt. -The Blessing of the Sun (ברכת החמה, Birkat ha-Ḥamah) is a blessing recited on a designated day in Nisan every 28 years as a recognition of the beginning of a complete solar cycle; the count of days beween each blessing is 10,227. According to the calendar computation of the Birkat ha-Ḥamah cycles in history, this blessing was actually recited on the 7th of Nisan 5573 (i.e. Wed., 7 April 1813). Since it often occurs less than three times in one lifespan, the tone of the inscriber is joyful. -Bonfeld was the name of the hamlet of Bad-Rappenau near Heilbronn in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, and has had documentation of living Jews there in the 19th century as being less than 10 families. Current writer didn't identify this inscriber as a resident in documentation (digitized by the Universität Heidelberg), and combined with the words "now I am joining among them" signify that this was likely a merchant or traveler staying in Bonfeld, inscribing the volume of Shulhan 'Arukh housed there after looking up the Halakhot of the Blessing of the Sun. Being that this was a noted Jewish community, this inscription is historically valuable.- Percent complete
