In an inscription in this book, a father laments the death of his son Yehuda (Judah) on 30 Nisan, 1817 (note that the date may not be correct, as he states it as a Tuesday, but the date corresponds to a Wednesday). Given that the previous page names an owner as Israel b. Judah, the deceased Judah lamented here must either have been an ancestor of the Israel b. Judah or a very young child who inherited the book from Judah's father (unnamed) later. Given that the next page laments the death of a Judah by his father, it is likely that the Israel b. Judah here is the father of the deceased who owned the book before him and gained it once more after his son's death, or, a son of the deceased Judah who inherited the book from his grandfather, who inherited it from his own deceased son. Can you help identify the name of the location mentioned in this inscription, דבדרידוש, perhaps in France? Chaim Meiselman theorizes: Dentritos, Dendron, is Greek for Tree. Maybe that was its origin. My partial translation: “This is why I weep and my eyes overflow with tears [from Lamentations 1:16 (but עיני עיני not עני עני)] for the death of my … son … the pleasant boy and scribe Yehuda de Bédarrides who passed away the third day [Tuesday] at six in the morning 30 of month Nisan in the year 5577 [Wednesday! April 16, 1817] at twenty minus four months, on Saturday parašat ‘If a woman be delivered, and bear a man-child’ [from Leviticus 12:2] … . May his death be his atonement and our atonement and rest and stand to the right. I feel sorry for you Yehuda my son, I feel sorry for you students of my son. In the stranger I had my son dead.”. I’m not sure of בזררו. It follows a peculiar French note talking about a father (“papa”) from a son or a daughter, that I could not understand; it shows the Hebrew words וידי and כ. Also Yisra’el b. Yehudah, who likewise owned this Maimonides (http://footprints.ccnmtl.columbia.edu/footprint/6350/), was “de Bédarrides”. Bédarrides is a little commune in the Vaucluse department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region in southeastern France. It became the French surname Bédarride; in Italy exists its variance Bedarida.
