I don't read Russian (yet!) but I got information from an inventory of the books that was done in Baltimore Hebrew College library where the stamps and Russian signatures were read. It was common in Lithuania in the 19th century to use Russian, less common in Lithuanian for the Rabbinate and lay leaders. I see in other footprints an identical stamp and signature: http://footprints.ccnmtl.columbia.edu/footprint/1937/ http://footprints.ccnmtl.columbia.edu/footprint/1938/ http://footprints.ccnmtl.columbia.edu/footprint/2514/ http://footprints.ccnmtl.columbia.edu/footprint/3030/ http://footprints.ccnmtl.columbia.edu/footprint/3202/ I notice that a number of the imprints censored by Gershonovich are Central-West European in Shaddeveh. He may have been of the"Rabbis" of the Cantonist reforms by Nicholas I of Russia.- Owner
