Antonio Constanzi - Sacri Palazzo Apostolico omisi etc.... Fabrizio Quaglia transcribes this as follows: the Italian XVIII-century censor’s note is “Revisto da me Gio[vanni] Antonio Costanzi Per ord.[ine] del R[everendissi]mo P.[adre] M.[aestro] del Sacro Palazzo Apostolico” The date has also been updated thanks to Fabrizio Quaglia: G.A. Costanzi most likely censored this Seder in April 1753 at Rome when the Maestro del Sacro Palazzo Apostolico (“Master of the Sacred Apostolic Palace”) commanded to sequester books from local Jews. Holy Office documents report the names of their owners, chiefly members of the richest families of Ghetto (ms. Generale perquisizione dei libri ebraici fatta nel 1753 ne’ Ghetti di Roma e dello Stato Pontificio in Archivio della Congregazione per la Dottrina della Fede, “Sant’Ufficio”, Stanza Storica, CC2-a, n. 5), who in some cases still after years lamented that books only to be expurgated had not been returned to them by Costanzi (on this confiscation see Marina Caffiero, Legami pericolosi. Ebrei e cristiani tra eresia, libri proibiti e stregoneria, Torino, Einaudi, 2012, pp. 32-33, and Rari e preziosi. Documenti dell’età moderna e contemporanea dall’Archivio della Congregazione per la Dottrina della Fede, Roma, Gangemi, 2009, pp. 84-85). The Master of the Sacred Apostolic Palace was a Dominican friar, a theologian living in Vatican and giving “imprimatur” to books to be published and sold in Rome. In 1749-1759 was Maestro del Sacro Palazzo Apostolico Giuseppe Agostino Orsi (1692-1761); in 1738-1749 Orsi had been Secretary of the Congregation of the Index to the Prohibited Books (see item “Orsi, Giuseppe Agostino” by Adelisa Malena in Dizionario biografico degli italiani, Roma, Istituto dell’Enciclopedia Italiana, volume LXXIX, 2013, pp. 590-593).- Percent complete
