ELIEZER BEN ISAAC RIETI, a pupil of the yeshivah of *Conegliano, published in Venice in 1612 a Lu'ah Ma'amarei Ein Yisrael ("alphabetical index of Ein Yisrael"); another of his works was on the Kelalei ha-Talmud. This copy has several inscriptions that are not legible to me but it is clear that this copy did not travel along with the other copy of the same book in the JTS library. It was also bound with some paper containing scribblings in Italian. This copy looks like the user was making corrections to the index in places which means that this index was used and reflects a reading public for the En Yaakov in Venice in the early 1600s. Does this mean that we should check indeces with an eye toward users via maginalia, inscriptions and the like. Indeces of books like the En Yaakov are sure indications that people were referring to the indeces to locate aggadic passages in the EY.- Owner
