Sholem Asch sold his library to Louis Rabinowitz, a philanthropist, and it was Rabinowitz who made the gift to Yale in 1945, although Asch fully supported the choice. Louis Rabinowitz's name, which appears on Talmud Bavli Masekhet Sanhedrin, vol. 23, does not appear on this copy's bookplate. The bookplate seems to suggest that Asch gifted this volume to Yale in memory of the Jews of Poland who perished in the Holocaust. A note in the copy also indicates that March 5, 1948 was the date Yale either received this particular copy or catalogued it.
