Alexander Kohut arrived in New York in 1884/5 and became the rabbi at Congregation Ahavat Chesed. Possibly he brought his library from Europe, although he seems to have continued to collect Jewish books while in New York. His son inherited all of this books when he died in 1894 and then gifted them to Yale. It is not clear whether this copy of Massekhet Kiddushin was in Alexander's library before George inherited it. Leon Nemoy, the librarian at Yale at the time of the donation, does not offer us a record of whether this copy once belonged to Alexander, but it seems highly likely that George inherited this copy and turned it over to Yale, along with his father's collection of 5000 volumes in his father's memory. See the bookplate inside the book copy and also see, Leon Nemoy's, "The Alexander Kohut Collection of Judaica," Yale University Library Gazette, 2:2 (1927), pp. 18 and 20. Although Nemoy does not mention receiving any volumes of the Bomberg Talmud, the books he does mention there do not represent a complete list of what was donated. I am still searching for the bibliographic list that George created of his father's library.- Owner
