Regarding the expurgator. Very helpful context from Fabrizio Quaglia: The Jewish convert Giovanni Antonio (not Antionio) Costanzi was born in Costantinople, Rabbi in Split and other Jewish communities in Dalmatia and Bosnia, baptized in Würzburg (Germany) on 4 March 1731, then he moved in Rome around the middle of the 18th century where he emerged as a zealous and quite ignorant persecutor of Hebrew literature, confiscating and expurgating Hebrew books in 1753. Author of a polemical tract against the Jews (La verità della cristiana religione contro le vane lusinghe de’ moderni Ebrei, Rome 1749), He was born around 1705 and died in 1785. It has been found that Costanzi, “scriptor” of Hebrew in Vatican Library in 1766 and “lector” of Hebrew in Propaganda Fide college, wrote an Index expurgatorius, titled Norme per la revisione dei libri composti dagli Ebrei (undated and unnumbered folios; in Rome, Archivio della Congregazione per la Dottrina della Fede, Sant’Officio, Stanza Storica, BB3-i) regarding Hebrew printed books; it alleged two lists called Parte Prima. In the first attached Indice Costanzi listed 188 items that could not be given back to its Jewish owners for their dangerous content and neither could be owned by them (like Bible rabbinical commentaries, and cabalistic and magical texts; Bible itself hade to be printed in some permitted editions), the second one counts 415 items that could be returned after expurgation and correction. Dictionaries, grammar manuals, ascetic and ethical texts, medical and history books did not need any list because not dangerous or offensive to Christianity.- Percent complete
