Footprints information provided by Fabrizio Quaglia: Inside the covers, partially cut off, and sometimes deleted, Italian lists of payments for goods including prices and accounts written by different hands (it can be deduced by chronological proximity perhaps also by Sanson Sacerdote Modon, below), on 25 April 1713 (referring to 21 December 1712), 16 March 1713, 11 May 1713 [?], including clothes, shirts, shoes, pants, and jewels, in which mention is made of “Salamone Macerata”, “Abram Vitta Lombroso”, “Leon Vita Ancona”, a certain “Falin”, “Lazaro Colorni”, and “Fr[at]elli Ancona”. Some of them were members of some relevance in the Jewish community of Mantua (Leon Vita Ancona and Lazaro Colorni are registered in the Archivio della Comunità Ebraica di Mantova. Sezione Antica, Etica; Volume III, Libro VI, pp. 6-7 and 58 ). In a margin, at the end, Italian ownership in the form of a rigmarole: “Mant[ova] // [Questo libro è dicarta / Questa car]ta è di stracio. / [Questo stracio è di lino. Questo lino] è di terra. Qu[esta terra è di Dio. Questo lib]ro è il mio; / Mantova”, meaning “[This book is made of paper / This pap]er is made of rags. / [This rag is made of linen. This linen] is from the land. Thi[s land belongs to God. This bo]ok is mine”. This was a way of affirming the property of a book used in the 18th and 19th centuries by pupils, in Italy and elsewhere; they wrote these words or similar in their schoolbooks so that they were not stolen or that they might be returned to them if lost. Apparently, this custom was taken over by Jewish students, but its origin could also be Jewish (cf. FRANCESCO NOVATI, Scrittori e possessori di codici, “Il Bibliofilo”, III, 1882, 3, pp. 38-41). On the right side of the title page, owner’s Italian note written as one continuous word “Sanson Sacerd[ot]e Modone”. Below it, he inscribed his purchase date in cursive Hebrew, Italian script מנטובה ר"ח כסלו התס"ג ליצי]רה] (“Manṭuah, vigil of month Kislew 5463 from the Creation [= 21 November 1702]”); ח"ר is the acronym of חודש ראש. On the upper left side, cursive Hebrew purchase note, Italian script, crossed out, קנין כספי אני שמשון כהן מודון (“Bought with my money. I [am] Šimšon Kohen Modon, may his Rock keep him and grant him life”); ו''יצ is the acronym of ויחיהו צורו ישמרהו. On the left side, cursive Hebrew owner’s note, Italian script, מהצעיר שמשון כהן מודון יצ"ו (“From the young Šimšon Kohen Modon, may his Rock keep him and grant him life”). Between the columns’ bases of the architectural title page, Š. Kohen Modon added two Biblical quotations: לא ימוש ספר התורה הזה מפיך / והגית בו יומם ולילה כי אז / תצליח את דרכיך / ואז תשכיל / ושננתם לבניך ודברת בם (“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. And you shall teach them diligently to your children and shall talk of them”). The first four lines were taken from Joshua 1:8, the last one from Deuteronomy 6:7. It was not unusual that Jews signed their books with the above-mentioned verses from Joshua.- Owner
