Footprint information from Fabrizio Quaglia: In the margins of almost every page the unpublished למאור שמן Šemen la-Ma’or (“Oil for Illumination”) composed by the same Malki’el Aškenazi was copied in cursive Hebrew, 17th-century Italian script, by the Mantuan scribe Malki’el b. Avraham Aškenazi. This work is a commentary to Sefer Menorat ha-Ma’or (“The book [called] Lamp of Illumination”) by Yiṣḥaq Aboab, with some glosses and corrections to the text, sometimes in square Hebrew, made by M. Aškenazi. In the right inferior corner of f. 3b the same copyist drafted a peculiar menorah with captions that refer to the nerot (“branches”), namely the seven sections in which this book is divided, cut off at the right margin, and on f. 53v a geometric figure. [Very special thanks are due to Yael Okun and Dr. Yakov Fuchs of the National Library of Israel for having found that the author of Šemen la-Ma’or was its own copyist Malki’el Aškenazi, for pointing out the meaning of above-mentioned drawing of the menorah, to Y. Okun for having noticed a non-Hebrew inscription on f. 105v, namely the Italian name “Pio”, and to Y. Okun and Alexander Gordin, paleographer and staff member of the NLI, for having suggested the reading of the purchase note קנין .[כספי ל' בנימין בן ציון דוד Dates based on dates of Ashkenazi's activity in Mantua- Owner
