Footprint information from Fabrizio Quaglia In the inferior right corner of f. 43v, owner’s Italian note, in pencil, “Menorad Amaor / di P. Finzi / d’Abramo / Il giorno [?] 15 Giugno 1859”. At the bottom of f. 105v he wrote his name in full “Pio”. Only as a hypothesis corroborated by the fact that Kaufmann B 498 was formerly owned by a Jew from Ferrara, we report that a landowner Pio son of Abramo Finzi was born in Ferrara. In the years 1887-1888, when his father Abramo was already dead, Pio was a secretary and counsellor in the Banca Mutua Popolare of Ferrara (cf. “Bollettino ufficiale delle società per azioni”). In 1889, he wrote articles in the “Gazzetta di Ferrara” in which he advocated to use the Monte di Pietà of Ferrara also for a pawn loan on behalf of raw hemp traders; they would leave their products in Monte di Pietà warehouses. His proposal was refused. Maybe this Pio Finzi is the same man that in 1859 owned Kaufmann B 498. [Very special thanks are due to Yael Okun and Dr. Yakov Fuchs of the National Library of Israel for having found that the author of Šemen la-Ma’or was its own copyist Malki’el Aškenazi, for pointing out the meaning of above-mentioned drawing of the menorah, to Y. Okun for having noticed a non-Hebrew inscription on f. 105v, namely the Italian name “Pio”, and to Y. Okun and Alexander Gordin, paleographer and staff member of the NLI, for having suggested the reading of the purchase note קנין .[כספי ל' בנימין בן ציון דוד- Owner
