"Footprint information from Fabrizio Quaglia:\n\nהגיע לחלק הנעלה כמה\"ר רפאל רוויגו\n(“It [this book] came to the sublime honourable teacher the rabbi Refa’el Rovigo”)\n\nRovigo, Refa’el: Information about his life is very sparse. In the Hebrew register of the 25 circumcisions made during the years 1730-1733 by Natan b. Šelomoh Kohen of Reggio Emilia, we read that Refa’el on 19 June 1731 was sandak in Reggio of Šemu’el, son of a certain Yišma’el Liuṣi (Liuzzi); it is the circumcision no. 12 at f. 31b. The original text was kept at the Library of the Collegio Rabbinico Italiano in Florence, ms. 111, but now is in Centro Bibliografico dell’Unione delle Comunità Ebraiche Italiane of Rome (cf. Angelo Piattelli and Riccardo Di Segni, below); its digital version is available on the Ktiv website (below). This Refa’el Rovigo is not to be confused with Refa’el Miḵa’el Rovigo, father of the known kabbalist and sabbatean Avraham Rovigo of Modena (c. 1650-1714), as some sources alleged (cf. Gershom Scholem in Encyclopedia Judaica, below). As well as in the Kaufmann collection the inscription הגיע לחלק הנעלה כמה\"ר רפאל רוויגו can be read on the title page of five auctioned Hebrew books:\n1) The second edition with commentaries of Ša’arei Dura (“Gates of Düren”), a rabbinic code on ritual salting, dietary and menstrual laws and more, by the German rabbi Yiṣḥaq b. Me’ir of Düren (fl. second half of the 13th century), published in Venice in 1548; sold in New York for $ 400 on 7 November 2019 (cf. Kestenbaum, Auction 85, below). The same copy had already been auctioned and sold there for $ 500 on 18 December 2008 (cf. Kestenbaum, Auction 42);\n2) The third edition of Toldot Yiṣḥaq (“The History of Isaac”) by the Spanish rabbi Yiṣḥaq Qaro (Caro; 1458-1535), that is a concise Torah commentary, printed in Riva di Trento in 1558; it was sold in New York on 27 October 2010 for $ 650 (cf. Kestenbaum, Auction 49, below);\n3) The first edition (Cremona 1576) of Yosef Laqaḥ (“He increases Learning”) – a commentary on the Book of Ester – by the Greek physician Eli‘ezer Aškenazi (1512-1585), rabbi of Cremona; whose incomplete copy was sold on 11 July 2016 in Jerusalem with three other XVIIc Hebrew books for $ 1,000 (cf. Kedem, Auction 51. Part I, below);\n4) The first edition (Venice 1697) of Darkei no’am (“Ways of pleasantness”), a collection of responsa by the Egyptian rabbi Mordeḵay b. Yehudah ha-Levi (c. 1600- c. 1684); sold with six other books of responsa in Jerusalem on 24 June 2010 for $ 350 (cf. Kedem, Auction 10);\n5) The only edition (Venice 1730) of Meliṣ Yošer (“Advocates of the Right”) i.e., explanations of the penitential liturgy written by the Paduan rabbi Isaia Romanin (1690/1695-1769); sold in Jerusalem on 8 April 2019 for $ 244 (cf. Winner’s Auctions Ltd., below).\nSources: GERSHOM SCHOLEM, Rovigo, Abraham ben Michael, in Encyclopedia Judaica, XIV, Jerusalem, Encyclopaedia Judaica, 1972, cols. 355-356; RICCARDO DI SEGNI, Catalogue of the Manuscripts of the Library of the Collegio Rabbinico Italiano, Rome, Ramat-Gan, 1990, no. 10.18, p. 159; ANGELO PIATTELLI, Il Registro di un Mohel reggiano del Settecento (1730-1733), “La Rassegna Mensile di Israel”, LVII, 1991, 3, pp. 490, 493, 497, 502; KESTENBAUM, Auction 42.
