Samuel Bueno de Mesquita died in 1802. Thanks to Fabrizio Qaglia for providing the information in this footprint. On the recto of first fly-leaf some cursive Sephardic XVIIIc Hebrew words translated in Portuguese and a Portuguese note commenting passages of Sefer ha-‘Iqqarim; this commentary continues on the back fly-leaf. On recto of the second fly-leaf cursive Sephardic Hebrew note on the theory of divinity ,[ האחדות הנאמר עליו ית[ברך הוא ענין שוללי, לפי שאיננו תואר נוסף על העצמות (“Unity which is predicated of God is negative therefore does not necessitate multiplicity in God’s essence”), that is made up of two lines taken from Sefer ha-‘Iqqarim, treatise II, chapter 10.5 and the related Dutch inscription “de Eenigheyd van God Almagtigh, is geen s' gelyke in alle 't geschaapene. En men zegt Hij is, Een, is om te ontkennen. Dat 'en meerdere getal, onmogelyk in Hem is” (“The unity of God Almighty, there is none alike in all created things. And they that say that God is One they deny him. That a multiple number, is impossible in Him”) [I thank Rachel Boertjens, curator of Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana]; as for “And they that say that God is One they deny him” on my opinion the writer meant to say that God is One but his Uniqueness is so beyond the human understanding of the concept of One in God that to define it is to deny God himself. I think also that the writer of both is a Dutch Jew of Portuguese origin who signed himself on the upper left side of f. 2r קיית כספי אני הצעיר ע"ה שמואל חיים בוהינו די משקיטה (“Bought with my money I, the young signed Šemu’el Ḥayyim Bueno de Meśqiṭah”) [I thank Yael Okun and dr. Yacov Fuchs of the National Library of Israel for completing my rendering of this inscription], קיית is surely wrong for קינית ; in addition he wrote short marginal glosses on many pages of this ‘Iqqarim. Samuel Bueno de Mesquita (also called Samuel Haim Bueno de Mesquita) died on 22 November 1802 in Amsterdam, where he lived at least since 1755, see entry “Samuel Bueno Mesquita” in the website “Openarchives. Search the genealogical data of Dutch and Belgian archives”, . He is mentioned on top of f. 1r of ms. 47 C 43 of the Ets Haim Library in Amsterdam, ; furthermore his ownership is partially readable on the left upper margin of f. 1r of the XVIIIc Ms. B 175 (on religious disputations) located at the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts, the Russian Academy of Sciences of St. Petersburg, and it is clearly visible on the title page of Toldot Yiṣḥaq by Yiṣḥaq Qaro, printed in Riva di Trento on 1558, auctioned in Israel on June 9, 2020 by Kedem, . In 1754-55 and 1778 during his fundraising missions for the Jews of Hebron rabbi Ḥayyim Yosef Dawid Azulay met for a short time S. Bueno de Mesquita at his home in Amsterdam, see The Diaries of Rabbi Ha‘im Yosef David Azulai (‘Ma’gal Tov’ – The Good Journey); Translated and annotated by Benjamin Cymerman, Jerusalem, Bnei Issakhar Institute, 1997, pp. 96, 211, 218, 221, 248.- Owner
