LC copy Lacks title-page and a number of leaves (all of which are provided in a separate sheaf of facsimiles). Rebound in full leather and housed in Conservation Box. Folio. The first book printed in any language on the African continent is this volume in Hebrew, dealing with Hebrew liturgy. It is an almost exact copy of the work published in Lisbon (and which is the second book published in the city) twenty-seven years earlier by Samuel Nedivot and his son Isaac. They found haven in Fez after the expulsion of the Jews from Portugal. This copy was printed in Kisleṿ shenat 277 [November or December 1516]. Mentioned in Mavin Heller's article "A Fleeting Moment, A Short-lived Press: Hebrew Printing in Sixteenth Century Fez" in Sephardic Horizons 11:1 (2021) https://sephardichorizons.org/Volume11/Issue1/Heller.html This copy is part of the Ephraim Deinard Collection, which was presented by Jacob H. Schiff to the Library of Congress.- Owner
