In his notes on this book, Manuel does not indicate any previous provenance or when he acquired the book. But a letter from Manuel to Maurice Ettinghausen, dated November 14, 1927 indicates that Ettinghausen is planning to send bibliographical material on Hebrew books to Margery Withers in Twickenham, London. . (Ettinghausen, Rare Books and Royal Collectors, 1966, p. 196) In the next letter, dated December 26, 1927, Manuel reports that he sent Portuguese manuscripts with Withers' English translations to the publishers on December 24, including "ben Nahman; the Abudrahim". (ibid, p. 200). So Manuel had Abudraham and Nahmanides commentary in his library as of 1927. However, Ettinghausen also writes "the first two books the King possessed, namely two Hebrew incunables printed in Lisbon in 1489" (p. 91) and earlier that he (Ettinghausen) began acquiring books for Manuel in 1919 (p. 89). Manuel and Ettinghausen first met in Munich in 1913 Ettinghausen, p. 88), when Manuel worked for Ludwig Rosenthal so there is a chance that Ettinghausen sold this to Manuel as early as that.- Owner
