CJS copy formerly owned by the members of the Corcos family living in Italy during the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries. A paper pinned into the front flyleaf records the birth of brothers, Yaʻaḳov and Yosef Corcos, in 1731 and 1734 respectively. The flyleaves note deaths in the family, beginning with the death of Yaʻaḳov Corcos on 21 Kislev 5554 (13 December 1794); his widow Gracia Corcos, 25 Tishre 5571 (23 October 1810); the deaths of Binyamin Shabtai and Regina Śimḥah, Shemuʼel Ḥayim, Gabriel, and Neḥama, all children of Yaʻaḳov, between 1813 and 1826. Other members of the Corcos family include Mosheh, Avraham Ḥayim, and Neḥama, between 1838 and 1848. Also, there is a penciled note of the death of Adolfo Corcos, 6 December 1906, with a large pencil drawing of a man beside it. Fabrizio Quaglia provides further transcription: FRONT FLY-LEAF. A piece of paper pinned on it shows: a. Birth of Yosef Corcos Adar 591 [1731]. b. Birth of Ya‘aqov Corcos, ”1754 [?] Nascita 16 ...”, in Italian. Below the paper: 1. Death of Binyamin Šabbetay Corcos old son of the beloved rabbi Jacob Corcos day fourth (Wednesday) 25 Ṭevet 5583, in Italian “8 Genaro 1823”; he was buried the next day. 2. Death of Mrs. Regina Śimḥah Corcos at the night of fourth day (Wednesday) of month Adar I 5584 “Corrispondente al 25 Feb.o 1824 […] 26. Adar Primo 5584”, in Italian; buried the same day. 3. Death of the dear venerable old man Šemu’el Ḥayyim Corcos old son of the beloved rabbi Ya‘aqov Corcos 22 Elul 5586, “li 24. Settembre 1826”, in Italian. SECOND FLY-LEAF: 4. Death of Graṣia (Grazia) Corcos 25 Tišri 5571, 23 Ottobre (day and month transcribed in Hebrew) “1810” (in Arab numbers). 5. Deathof wife Sṭela (in Italian Stella; it’s Hebrew Esther) Corcos in the night of fifth day Thursday) 18 of month Menaḥem (= Av) 5581 “16. Agosto 1821” (in Italian); she was buried the same day. 7. Death of the pleasant child Neḥamah (Consola) Corcos in the night of first day (Sunday) 28 Menaḥem (=Av) 5581, in Italian “il 26. Agosto 1821”. THIRD FLY-LEAF: 8. Death of Mošeh Corcos 12 Elul 5595 “Che Corisponde 6. Settembre 1835 ossia il dì 12 Illul”, in Italian. 9. Death of Šabbetay Yiṣḥaq Corcos 5 Kislew 5599 “che Corisponde 22 Novembre 1838”, in Italian. 10. Death of venerable old man Avraham Ḥayyim Corcos day 33 of ’Omer of month Iyyar 5601 = May 9, 1841. 11. Death of Mrs. Neḥamah (Consola) Corcos 4 Adar 627 “che Corrisponde al dì 8 Febbraio 1848” (in Italian). 12. This entry is only in Italian and it’s dedicated to the death of Flaminia Corcos: “il dì 25 Gennaio 1860 passò da questa a miglior vita Flaminia Corcos che corrispose allo ... ... del mese Scebat” [1 Ševaṭ 5620]. The blue-penciled Italian note “Adolfo Corcos 6 Decembre 1906” was later added. LAST FLY-LEAF: On it appears a drawing of a bearded man. I think it is a sketch of Adolfo Corcos from Leghorn made by the famed painter Vittorio Corcos (Leghorn 1859 – Florence, 1933), or by Massimiliano, son of V. Corcos (1894-1916); both were converted to Christianity. If I correctly identified the subject then the above note is not referred to his death but when his portrait was created.- Owner
