Fabrizio Quaglia transcribes: “Esta Gimara [now ‘Guemará’] he [?; perhaps for ‘é’] do s[enho]r Ëliau Ben Veniste A quem noso [correct ‘nosso’] s[enho]r Guarde p[ra] infinitos e largos annos Amen”. My conjectured translation: “This Gemarah is of mr. Eliahu Benveniste whom our Lord keep for infinite and long years. Amen”. The old Sephardic Benveniste family in the course of time has spread in its various branches in many parts of Europe and even in Curaçao. Here’s my little conjectures about E. Benveniste identity. First of all the maintenance of Portuguese language from E. Benveniste, but apparently not of Hebrew, in a period in which Jews already had been expelled from Iberian regions, can mean that he was a descendant of Marranos. I suppose in fact that his way of writing belongs to XVII-XVIII centuries. Therefore I offer two suggestions regarding who was this guy. In the beginning of XVII century one Eliau Benveniste was merchant in Venice, with close commercial links to Amsterdam and West Africa; see JONATHAN I. ISRAEL, The Jews of Venice and their Links with Holland and with Dutch Jewry (1600-1710), in Gli Ebrei e Venezia. Secoli XIV-XVIII. A letter (today at Oxford, Bodleian Library, Ms. Opp. Add. Qu. 150) was addressed to another Sr. Eliau Benveniste in Amsterdam on 26 January 1717; see ANTONIO ENRÍQUEZ GÓMEZ, Romance al divín mártir, Judá Creyente (don Lope de Vera y Alarcón) martirizado en Valladolid por la Inquisición.
