All notes by Chaim Meiselman: This is a volume of the Maḥzor for the German, Bohemian, and Polish rites printed in 1670 by Uri Faivesh (Phoebus) ben Aharon ha-leṿi, printed in Amsterdam. The German and Bohemian rites are generally not singly mentioned, while often in the volume are notations for Polish rite and additions. There is an additional commentary called Maʻagle tsedeḳ, a commentary explaining the piyutim created from the commentaries by R. Binyamin ha-leṿi and R. Avraham b. Avigdor Ḳara of Prague. The German, Bohemian and Polish Maḥzor was first printed at Prague in 1618-1620 by Mosheh b. Betsalel Kats, also in folio format, also with the Maʻagle tsedeḳ commentary; the commentary was first printed at Venice 1567 by Giorgio de Cavalli, with elements of the Sabbionetta-Cremona 1556 printing of R. Binyamin ha-leṿi's commentary and elements of the Prague 1549-1550 edition with R. Avraham Ḳara's commentary. The volume contains many innovations for the typography of capitol letters, including letterforms with scrolls, different block patterns, and decorations. Added typesetters from the colophon: Reʼuven b. Eliaḳum from Mainz; Mosheh b. Aharon of Worms; Uri Fayvesh b. Avraham of Amsterdam; and Mordekhai b. Yehudah-Leb of Amsterdam. The pagination is irregular; after 80, it follows until leaf 312.

All notes by Chaim Meisleman notes ‫ Chronogram: .א.ת .צ.מח .ד.וד .ת.צמיח (1735). ‬ Titles for the Sulzbach folio Mahzorim variants are from the same woodblock engravings. Lack of the common arhitechtural scheme, but with Moses and Aaron depicted in large. Six mini-illustrations above them crown the page: The angel bans Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden, the destruction of the Tower of Babel, Jacob dreams of Angels on the Ladder, Noah building an Ark, Abraham (wearing a crescent-moon headgarb) tends to the Three Angels, and Isaac blesses Jacob with Rebbeca behind him. This edition has approbations of Barukh Kahana Rapaport of Steinach-Fürth, dated 10 Sivan 1734; Moses Katzenellenbogen of Schwäbisch-Sulzbach-Ansbach, (Baden-Württemberg), dated 6 Sivan 1734; Meir b. Isaac of Eisenstadt (Burgenland, Austria), dated 27 Nisan 1734. Between the Lamentations and the service for 9 Av and following Sabbath (Nahamu), curious placement of יוצר לשבת נשואין (prayers for the week of marriage) and יוצר לברית מילה (Prayer for the Circumcision ceremony). Zalman b. Ahron published a number of sets of the folio Mahzor mi-kol ha-shanah between 1728-1736, with the prayer divided into two volumes. When one volume would contain prayers, laws, and Piyyutim of Rosh ha-Shanah, Yom Kippur, and Sukkot, the other would contain Yotsrot, Piyyutim, and laws for Passover, Shavu’ot, and Eikha / Lamentations, and finally the Kinnot. Each volume begins with the Shaharit, being that the additions appropriate for the occasion would be added by turning to a later point in the volume. Each volume is finished by Hadrat Kodesh, notes and ethical elements from medieval works on Prayer, authored by Yosef b. Isaac ha-levi. The commentary framing the text of the prayers was authored by Yosef Yuzpa (Jospe) Hohne-Nurlingen. references Friedberg, Beit Eked Sefarim, mem 1316 : 24 variant.

BHB invented a new YUD in the chronogram. All notes by Chaim Meiselman: First 80 leaves (of the first count) are devoted to prayers for Yom Kippur and organized in the order of recitation. After the closing of the Yom Kippur prayers (Ne’ilah), printers add a finish mark (Tam) and begin additional devotional prayers in prose (Piyutim). Woodcuts of the Zodiac with Hebrew subtitles under each, ls. 19b (20 skips page count) 21 and 22a (2nd. count). Special leaf of Seliha (penitential composition) of Abraham b. Avigdor Kara; see the information on this composition printed in (Heb.) Eliezer Ländshutte, ’Amude ha-’Avodah (Berlin: G. Bernstein, 1857; reprint New York: Hermon, 1967), p.2, negating that this author was the son of Avigdor Kara (d.1439), a prominent author of Ashkenazic Piyyutim, or more likely another figure named Abraham b. Avigdor of Prague - living almost a century later. Current writer hasn’t seen another such overt attribution to Abraham b. Avigdor Kara as does this. ‫ Chronogram: א.ל.ה מועד.י. .ה. מק.ר.א. קד.ש. (1786). ‬ Title ornament scheme has three clusters topping a frame., with an extra row of flora and two bottom-triangles on the bottom. Seal of the city of Dyherrnfurth (’Sigilium Civitatis Duhrenfurtensis’) crowned around St. George killing a dragon, the traditional coat-of-arms to Dyhernfurth. Sporadic paginations. New count begins on Yotser la-yom rishon shel sukot.

Remarkably unadorned for a Mahzor of this period. Exceptions are a printers mark on leaf 173b following Ne'ilah, and the Zodiac illustrations on ls. 208b-212a, which reach each end of the text-column.In Hebrew characters.Miniature.One volume, encompassing the entire yearly rite using standard Piyyutim and Yotzrot. The only missing part of the print is the service and Kinot of the 9th of Av, which Moses Landau printed separately a number of times.

notes by Chaim Meiselman: General Note In this edition, 'Shir ha-Kavod' ('The Hymn of Glory') follows Kabalat Shabat, preceding Festival prayers (and Halel). General Note Added Selihah of Ele'azar Ashkenazi, fols. 71-72, noted by the Bibliography of the Hebrew Book as not having been printed since the Krakow 1588 edition by Isaac Prosstitz; there stating that it was brought (to Central Europe) by a pious and devout man, from the residents of Jerusalem. Adjacent is פזמון בשעת המגפה חו, 'communal-prayer of a time of plague, heaven forfend', authored during the 17th century by 'R. Moshe Reb-Mendells' of Krakow, who was Av-Beth-Din of Prague. General Note Additional printer at colophon: Mosheh b. Yisra'el Eiteiss (אוטיץ) of Prague. General Note Folio edition, referencing the Sulzbach (1716-17) edition on the title as being a replica. Actually, it is a replica of the Mahzor for Polish Rite, published at Prague by Juda Bak, the publisher's father (Steinschneider, Cat. Libr. Bodl. 2534) - hence the type-face and ornamentation give the impression of being older. General Note Ornamentation throughout. Notable in vol. 2 are two female busts (with made-up hair in the Roman manner) on folio 28b, adorning the 'Nishmat' prayer of Sabbath and Festival mornings; male cherub faces on folio 3b (2nd. count); and a crown-triangular design on fol. 243a (2nd. c.). General Note Cum Licentia Superiorum.
