All notes by Chaim Meiselman: notes This is a volume consisting of a complete manual for the Mohel, or specialist ritual circumciser. The original binding was a heavy leather case, meant for travel or utility; this reflects the travel and transport of the Mohel for this historical period, and the use of this volume as a part of the working life of a Mohel in the 17th/18th centuries. The volume begins with the titled work ’Sod Hashem’, which are written laws and sermonic/homiletic material pertaining to the ritual circumcision; it is framed by the commentary of Sharṿit ha-Zahav. Next, the text features the blessings and prayers recited during the actual ceremony of the circumcision, and finishes with Birkat ha-Mazon. Finally, the last element of the printed volume is Yiddish-Daitsch, and it contains laws, legends, and customs pertaining to the ritual circumcision. - The volume contained blank leaves, meant as a diary of circumcisions performed by a Mohel. This volume was originally published Amśṭerdam, 1679 or 1680, by David de Castro Tartas. The first ed. by Props, the print shop which this items was published, was in 1708 or 1709. contents Sod H. -- Sharṿit ha-zahav -- Birkat ha-mazon -- Dine pidyon ha-ben -- Berit H.- dc:title
