Auf Antrag der Oberschulbehörde errichtete der Senat 1928 das Staatliche Lichtbildamt; nach Schaffung eines reichseinheitlichen Lichtbildwesens ging es in der Landesbildstelle Hansa auf, die für Bremen, Lübeck und Hamburg zuständig war; daneben nahm sie seit 1935 die Aufgaben eines Landesbildarchivs wahr und sammelte die Werke bedeutender Hamburger Fotografen. Bis 1997 waren sowohl die Landesbildstelle Hamburg als auch bis 2003 das Landesmedienzentrum Hamburg der Behörde für Jugend, Schule und Berufsbildung unterstellt. Die Stelle wurde dann 2004 aufgelöst, wobei die Unterrichtsmedien bei der Schulbehörde verblieben, die Bildbestände hinfort in das Bildarchiv des Denkmalschutzamtes Hamburg (Fotografische Abteilung) integriert wurden.
