Sohn des Viehhändlers Samuel L. und der Regine, geb. Ney (beide umgekommen im Ghetto Theresienstadt) 1919-1928 Gymnasium Augsburg, 1928-1929 JTS und Univ. Breslau, 1929-1930 Univ. Berlin, 1930-1931 Univ. Würzburg, 1932 Promotion in Würzburg. 1929-1933 HWJ, Mitglied im Studentenausschuß der Hörer der HWJ, 1933 Rabbinerexamen an der HWJ. Prediger in Nordhausen, Harz 1933 Jugendrabbiner in Mannheim, 1934-1938 Jugendrabbiner und Lehrer am Frankfurter Philanthropin und Dozent am Jüdischen Lehrhaus. Setzte sich aktiv für das Aufbauwerk Palästina ein. Nov. 1938 KZ Buchenwald, wurde nach drei Wochen entlassen, als die Vorsitzende der World Union for progressive Judaism, Miss Lily Montagu, ihm einen Anstellungsvertrag als Rabbiner in England zusandte. Dez. 1938 Emigration nach England, Mitarbeiter im “Woburn House“ und an der “West Central Liberal Synagogue“ in London. 1939-1940 Rb. bei der “Liberal Congregation“ in Brighton und Hove, 1940 Internierung als feindlicher Ausländer auf der Isle of Man, Dez. 1940 Emigration nach Brasilien mit Frau und Sohn im Auftrag der World Union for Progressive Judaism (WUPJ). 13. Hatte bedeutenden Einfluß auf die Entwicklung des Reformjudentums in Brasilien bis 1976 Professor an der Philosophischen Fakultät der Univ. Rio de Janeiro, später der geisteswissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Universita Federal do Rio de Janeiro und Leiter des Zentrums für Hebräische Sprache und Judaistik. Vizepräsident der zionistischen Organisation in Brasilien, Kuratoriumsmitglied der Hebräischen Univ. Jerusalem, Mitglied und Geschäftsführer der WUPJ und des WJC. Gründer des Centro Maimonides, eines Ausbildungsinstituts für Religionslehrer. Mitgründer und Mitglied des Exekutivkomitee der Confederação Israelita Rio de Janeiro, Mitglied des Rabbinerrats der Asociación de comunidades y organizaciones Israelitas en Latinoamérica (CENTRA) und Mitglied der Central Conference of American Rabbis, der Rabbinical Assembly of Amerika, der “B’nai B’rith“ und des Rotary Club.
