Sohn des Kaufmanns Chaim Herz (Hermann) K. und der Regina, geb. Stegemann Übersiedlung der Familie nach Hamborn bei Duisburg, Oberrealschule in Hamborn, verließ die Schule, um die Familie finanziell zu unterstützen, kaufmännische Lehre in Duisburg, 1925-1928 Möbelverkäufer in Hamborn, 1930 mit Hilfe Hermann Ostfelds das Abitur nachgeholt. 1930-1932 Univ. Berlin, 1933- 1935 Univ. Würzburg, 19. Febr. 1934 Promotion in Würzburg. 1930-1936 HWJ, 1935 Rabbinerexamen. Seit Febr. 1936 liberaler Rb. in Bochum, das gleichzeitig zum Bezirksrt. mit Zuständigkeit für Wattenscheid, Witten, Herne und Wanne-Eickel umgewandelt wurde. 1936 Heirat mit Hilde Ostfeld (gest. 2003), der künstlerisch veranlagten Schwester des Rb. Hermann Ostfeld sie spielte Klavier, malte, sang und tanzte. Mitglied im Rheinisch-Westfälischen Rabbinerverband und im ADR Zionist. Nov. 1938 KZ Oranienburg [Keller, 2001: Sachsenhausen], 1. Dez. 1938 wieder auf freiem Fuß, Febr. 1939 Emigration nach Palästina Sekretär, Lehrer und Schriftsteller in Jerusalem. 1955 Rb. in Göteborg, Schweden 1957 Dozent am Brooklyn College, New York, 1958-1965 Dozent am Hebräischen Lehrerseminar Boston, MA 1965-1970 Rb. und Religionslehrer am “Beth Sholom“ in Santa Ana, CA, seit 1970 Professor für Religionswissenschaften an der State University Fullerton, CA. Mitglied der Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR). Eine Tochter, Shulamit Kalir-Merton, ist Kantorin des “Temple Beth El“ in South Orange County, Aliso Viejo, CA/US.
