Pit Goldschmidt wurde als Kleinkind von seiner Mutter Käthe Starke-Goldschmidt, die ihn vor den Nationalsozialisten in Sicherheit bringen wollte, in ein katholisches Kinderheim gegeben. Seine Kindheit verbrachte er in verschiedenen Heimen und bei Pflegeeltern. Wie durch ein Wunder überlebte seine jüdische Mutter die Verfolgung und Deportation in das Ghetto Theresienstadt und kehrte nach der Befreiung 1945 nach Hamburg zurück. Pit konnte 1946 nach Hamburg zu seiner Mutter kommen, die er erst jetzt kennen lernte.
