Науч. иссл. по физике и технике ускорителей, физике плазмы, плазменной электронике, проблеме управляемого термоядерного синтеза. Разработал теорию линейных ускорителей на бегущих волнах, линейный плазменный бетатрон, предложил переменно-фазовую фокусировку, ускорение волнами плотности заряда в плазме и в нескомпенсированных электронных и протонных пучках. Предсказал (совм. с А.И.Ахиезером) и теоретически обосновал пучковую неустойчивость плазмы, обнаружил (совм.) ее экспериментально и исследовал свойства. Соавтор открытия эффекта аномально высокого сопротивления плазмы при больших плотностях тока и ее турбулентного нагрева. Один из основателей плазменной электроники. Er sagte voraus (mit A. I. Akhiezer) und begründete theoretisch die Instabilität des Strahlplasmas, entdeckte sie (gemeinsam) experimentell und untersuchte ihre Eigenschaften.
