Моск. матем. об-ва, гл. ред. Гос. изд. техн.-теорет. лит-ры (1932–33). По обвинениям, связанным с рев. прошлым и его нашумевшей кн. «Галилей и инквизиция» (ч.1, М., 1934) был исключен из партии и снят со всех постов. Автор справочников по элементарной и высш. математике, выдержавших многочисл. изд. в СССР и за рубежом. После 20 съезда КПСС ему было предложено восстановить членство в партии, от чего он отказался.
