Род. в эвакуации в театр, семье. Дебютировал рассказами в дет. ж. «Костер» в 1952. Учился на филол. ф-те Ленингр. гос. ун-та, но не окончил его. Был призван в армию, служил во внутр. войсках МВД. На основании этого опыта впоследствии написал цикл тюремных рассказов «Зона», где повествование ведется от лица охранника. Вернувшись в 1964 в Ленинград, работал в заводской многотиражной газ., публ. ст., рец., очерки в ж. «Аврора», «Нева», «Звезда» и др. Недолго принимал участие в лит. гр. «Горожане». Все это время пытался опубликовать рассказы, но безуспешно. В 1972 переехал в Таллин, работал в отд. информации газ. «Сов. Эстония». В изд-ве «Ээсти раамат» была подготовлена к печати кн. Д., затем остановленная по указанию КГБ. В 1975 вернулся в Ленинград, недолго работал в ж. «Костер». С 1979 в США. Жил в Нью-Йорке, работал в еженед. газ. Произв. «Д. печатались на рус. и англ. яз. Автор пов. «Чемодан», «Наши», «Ремесло», «Иностранка», многочисл. рассказов, в к-рых затрагивается и евр. тема. Удивительная естественность интонации и неподражаемый юмор – гл. черты прозы Д.
