Participant Polish. restore 1863; hiding from the persecution of the authorities, he left for France (1864). Successfully played in tournaments in the cafe "Regance" (1865–67), international. tournaments: Vienna (1873, 4th), London (1883, 8th) and others. Has won a reputation as one of the strongest chess players in France. Participant of matches with G. Neiman, I. Tsukertort, I. Kolish. Contributed to the development of opening theory.
