Discovered the phenomenon of self-compressibility of modulated waves. Developed new models of wave dynamics in the ocean and the theory of solitons as classical. particles. В 1959–65 работал в Горьковском политехн. ин-те. В 1965–77 ст. науч. сотр. Науч.-иссл. радиофиз. ин-та (Горький). С 1977 зав. лаб., гл. науч. сотр. Ин-та прикладной физики АН СССР (Горький). Чл. рос. и заруб. науч. об-в, чл. редколлегий ряда спец. журн.Обл. науч. интересов – гидрофизика и океанография, акустика, нелинейные волновые процессы, нелинейная оптика и лазеры, нек-рые проблемы биофизики. Открыл явление самосжимаемости модулированных волн. Разработал новые модели волновой динамики в океане и теорию солитонов как классич. частиц.
