Januar 1934 stieg der stratosphärische Ballon auf eine Rekordhöhe von 22.000 Metern, stürzte jedoch beim Abstieg ab. U. und seine Gefährten auf dem Flug A. B. Vasenko und P. F. Fedoseenko starben in der Nähe des Dorfes. Potizhsky Ostrog Mord. ASSR (heute das Dorf Usyskino). Sehen. Horden ausgezeichnet. Lenin. Urne mit U.'s Asche ist in der Kremlmauer begraben.

УСЫСКИН Илья Давидович (1910, Ярославская губ. – 1934), физик, воздухоплаватель. Род. в семье полит. ссыльных. В 1931 окончил Ленингр. политехн. ин-т. С 1932 доц. ЛФТИ. По рекомендации А.Ф.Иоффе принял участие в полете стратостата «Осоавиахим-1» с целью иссл. космич. лучей в верхних слоях атмосферы. 30 янв. 1934 стратостат поднялся на рекордную высоту 22 тыс. м, однако при спуске потерпел аварию. У. и его товарищи по полету А.Б.Васенко и П.Ф.Федосеенко погибли близ с. Потижский Острог Морд. АССР (ныне с. Усыскино). Посм. награжден орд. Ленина. Урна с прахом У. захоронена в Кремлевской стене.
