После окончания Моск. ин-та стали и сплавов (1960) работал в н.-и. ин-тах электронной пром-сти в Москве и Зеленограде. Одноврем. с 1970 преподавал в МФТИ. С 1988 – в Ленингр. ФТИ им. А.Ф.Иоффе АН СССР, дир. отд. твердотельной электроники и зав. сектором теоретич. основ микроэлектроники, с 1988 зав. кафедрой Ленингр. политехн. ин-та. Осн. тр. по физике полупроводников и полупроводниковым гетероструктурам, теории твердотельных микроэлектронных и оптоэлектронных приборов, теории фазовых переходов. Теоретич. работы С. привели к созданию новых типов полупроводниковых лазеров. Автор первых работ по теории резонансного взаимодействия электронов примесных центров с оптич. колебаниями кристаллич. решетки, теории кристаллизации в эпитаксии и теории диффузноконтролируемых реакций.
