РСДРП, с 1905 – на нелег. положении, неоднократно подвергался арестам. В 1905–06 – в эмиграции, в дальнейшем занимался журналистикой: сотрудничал в журн. «Вестник труда», «Вопросы страхования», газ. «Правда» и др. В февр.–окт. 1917 работал в Екатеринбургской орг-ции РСДРП(б), был зам. пред. Уральского обл. Совета, чл. обл. к-та РСДРП(б), редактировал местные парт. издания. Избран чл. Учредит. собрания от Перми. С дек. 1917 – в Петрограде, до 1924 неоднократно избирался чл. ВЦИК и его Президиума, до марта 1918 чл. Всерос. бюро воен. орг-ций при ЦК РСДРП(б). В 1918–24 ред. «Красной газ.» и газ. «Беднота» (с перерывами), с мая 1918 одноврем. один из ред. газ. «Правда»; участвовал в орг-ции агитпоездов ВЦИК. В 1919 пред. Екатеринбургского губревкома, затем секр. Харьковского губкома партии. С 1920 работал в Главполитпути, организовал газ. «Гудок» и неск. мес. возглавлял ее. С 1921 зав. Агитпропотделом ЦК ВКП(б). В 1925–26 чл. коллегии Наркомата земледелия РСФСР, в дальнейшем на журналист. работе. Во время т. н. дискуссии о профсоюзах (1920–21) поддержал платформу Л.Д.Троцкого. В 1927 на 15-м съезде ВКП(б) исключен из партии как «активный деятель троцкистской оппозиции». В 1935 восстановлен, в 1936 вновь исключен, вскоре арестован и расстрелян.
