В эти годы Б. публикует пов. «Дер тойбер» («Глухой», 1910), «Ин а фаргребтер штот» («В огрубевшем городе»), ром. «Нох алемен» («После всего», 1913). После рев-ции 1917 Б. активно участвует в создании сов. евр. лит-ры, публикует ром. «Ин фартунклте цайт» («В затемненные времена»), рассказы. Выступает также с критич. ст. и очерками, поев, проблемам новой поэзии и прозы. В 1921 Б. покинул Россию и поселился в Берлине, путешествовал по Румынии, Франции, США, изд. дет. лит.-худ. ж. «Ин шпан». В 1929 Б. вернулся в СССР, поселился в Москве. В 1932 в изд-ве «Дер эмес» выходит перв. ч. его эпопеи из жизни евреев Украины нач. 20 в. – ром. «Бам Днепр» («На Днепре»). В нач. 30-х гг. Б. неоднократно посещал Биробиджан, а в 1934 опубл. цикл рассказов о перв. строителях Евр. АО. Во мн. сов. евр. т-рах ставятся спектакли по его произв. В годы 2-й мир. войны Б. является чл. Евр. антифаш. к-та, чл. редколл. газ. «Эйникайт», а в 1947—48 альм. «Геймланд». В 1949 арестован.
