С 1898 изучал лит-ру, иск-во, философию и историю в Бернском и Фрайбургском ун-тах. Во время учебы в Берне примкнул к сионистам. С 1906 – в США, активист «Поалей Цион», первый ред. газ. «Дер идишер кемпфер» (Филадельфия). С 1914 чл. Амер. социалистич. партии, с 1920 чл. Ком. партии США, печатался в ее изд. Лит. деятельность начал в 1901 переводами на идиш произв. англ. писателей. В дальнейшем писал на ист. и лит. темы, автор ряда работ о выдающихся деятелях науки и культуры. С 1926 один из ред. коммунистич. журн. «Дер гамер». Автор иссл. «История клас. борьбы от древности до сего дня». В 1933 по приглашению Ин-та еврейской пролетарской культуры при ВУАН приехал в СССР, передал ин-ту собранные им материалы по истории еврейского раб. движения, участвовал в изд. избр. соч. Д.Эдельштадта, ред. собр. соч. М.Винчевского. В 1936 вернулся в США, где возглавил Рабочий ун-т. Автор кн. «Начало еврейской лит-ры в Америке» (1944), «Д.Эдельштадт» (1950), «И.Бовшовер» (1952). В 1959 вышли в свет мемуары М. «Майн лебнс гешихте» («История моей жизни», т. 1–2).
