В 16 в. евреям в З. принадлежало ок. 50% торговых домов, лавок, трактиров. После вхождения в состав Австрии экономич. положение евреев З. резко ухудшилось; мн. еврейские семьи переселились в др. города. В 1916 в Тернополь были выселены 4 еврея из З.Раввином З. в 19 в. был Фишл Малах, в 1920-х гг. — Цви-Гирш Шварц, в 1930-х гг. — Менахем-Мендл Мунд. В 1920—30-х гг. в З. действовали отд-ния разл. еврейских партий и орг-ций.
