Gelehrten Abraham-Aberle W., frühreifer Schüler von Lion Asser Günzburg an der Jeschiwa in Metz, 1777 Rb. in Créhange (Kriechingen) in Lothringen, 1784 Rückkehr nach Metz, dort nach Günzburgs Tod am 23. Juni 1785 Jeschiwaleiter, während der Revolution Nationalgardist, 1806 Dajan in Metz, 1807 im Sanhedrin als Abgeordneter des Dépt. Moselle, 1812 und 1820 bei den Wahlen für das Oberrabbinat unterlegen, 12. Juni 1832 Oberrabbiner, wird trotz seiner fehlenden Französischkenntnisse von der Regierung bestätigt. Persönlich streng konservativ, sympathisiert er mit manchen Reforminitiativen und hält sich deswegen als einziger großer Talmudist der Zeit von der Parteinahme gegen den Hamburger Tempel zurück.
