Apr. 1858 nach Chicago, nimmt dort eine Stelle als Bankangestellter an und betreibt private Talmudstudienfungiert als Sekretär eines geplanten „Jüdischen Reformvereins“ mit dem Credo: „All religious truths shall be based on free investigation and demonstration“. Frühjahr 1861 berufen zum Rb. der „Sinai“ Chicago, neugegr. radikal-reformierte Tochtergemeinde der „Kehillat Ansche Maarab“, Gegner der Sklaverei im Bürgerkrieg. 1862 Heirat mit Caroline Levi (st. 1863), 1863 legt er die Stelle nieder1864 Rb. in „Zion“ West Chicago, 1865 zweite Ehe mit Henriette Blumenfeld. 1866 Ehrendoktor der Univ. Chicago. 1869 Mitglied der Rb.-Versammlung von PhiladelphiaGründer der „Chicago Rabbinical Association“ und der „Jewish Publication Society of America“. 1887 emeritiert, in späteren Jahren Mitglied des zionistischen Aktions-Comités und Vizepräsident der „Federation of American Zionists“. 1902 vom Hebrew Union College und 1905 vom Jewish Theological Seminary of America zum „Doctor of Divinity“ (Dr. theol.) ernannt.";
