Nach sechs Jahren als Geschäftsmann und asketischer Privatgelehrter 1742 Nachfolger seines Lehrers als Jeschiwaleiter in Minsk, dann Oberrb. in Rakov mit zahlreichen Schülern, 1747 Rb. und Schulhaupt in Ukmerge (Wilkomierz), Litauen, 1757 Bezirksrb. in Smilovichi (Smilowitz) mit Zuständigkeit für die vierzig Landstädte und mehrere Hundert Dörfer des Minsker Oberlands, 1763 Oberrb. in Pinsk, reist 1771 zum Druck seiner Bücher nach Berlin und wird dort bekannt, allerdings nicht auf das Oberrt. berufen (nach anderer Version soll er einen Ruf abgelehnt haben), sechs Jahre lang Oberrb. in Posen, 1776 Oberrb. in der Dreigemeinde Altona- Hamburg-Wandsbek sowie der schleswig-holsteinischen Judenschaft. Zeugen seiner Predigten rühmten, daß er „aus dem Innern seines weisen Herzens einen reinen moralischen Vortrag hielt, der auf das Gemüth seiner Zuhörer so wunderbar wirkte, d[aß s]ie erschüttert in Tränen zerflossen“ (AZJ 1845, S. 193). Die von C. und den Gemeindeältesten ausgeübte strenge Kirchenzucht führt 1781-1782 zum Konflikt mit der Hamburger Gemeinde, der zufolge C. „sich erdreiste in Höchstdero Staaten ein Inquisitionsgericht aufzurichten und sich einer päpstlichen Gewalt anzumaßen“. C. wird am 8. Mai 1782 der Große Bann, später weitere Zwangsmittel entzogenworaufhin er zum 4. Juli 1799 das Amt niederlegt und fortan von sechs Hausvätern ernährt wird. Er plante seine Auswanderung nach Jerusalem, konnte dieses Vorhaben wegen der napoleonischen Kriege aber nicht durchführen. War durch Heirat seiner Tochter mit dem Sohn des Öttinger Landesrb. der Großvater des liberalen Politikers Gabriel Rießer (1806-1863).";
