Автор пьес: «Обратная связь», «Мы, нижеподписавшиеся», «Наедине со всеми», «Скамейка». На волне «гласности» в период «перестройки» в июле 1990 был избран чл. ЦК КПСС. В сентябре того же г. вышел из рядов партии. С 1989 по 1992 – деп. ВС СССР. С 1990 ведет публицистическую рубрику в ж. «Иск-во кино». Лауреат Гос. пр. СССР (1976; за сценарий ф. «Премия»).
