Until the age of seven she was brought up by her grandfather, a rabbi. In 1898 she entered honey. Faculty of Geneva un-that, to-ry graduated in 1903. Since 1904 she worked there at the department of physiology. chemistry (since 1917 head of the department, the first woman professor at the University of Geneva). Since 1925 - in the USSR. In 1925–48 the head. Department of Physiology 2nd Moscow State University (2nd MMI) and at the same time. (1929–48) dir. the Institute of Physiology of the RSFSR People's Commissariat for Education organized by her (since 1939 under the jurisdiction of the USSR Academy of Sciences). In 1929 she took part in the organization and was in charge. (until 1938) dep. developmental physiology in the Central Research Institute of motherhood and infancy and the department. general physiology at VIEM. The first female academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1949 she was arrested in the case of the EAK, in prez. to-rogo was elected in 1941. She returned to Moscow in 1953. In 1954–68 she headed the department. physiology Institute of biophysics of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Main scientific. tr. dedicated chemical problems and physical and chemical. the foundations of the life of the human and animal organism, as well as oxidative enzymes. One of the founders of the doctrine of histohematich. body barriers, substantiated their importance for maintaining homeostasis. In 1921 she proposed (with R. Gauthier) the concept of "blood-brain barrier" to designate a mechanism that selectively regulates the metabolism between the blood and the center. nerve. system and carrying out the protective function of the organism (Stal. pr., 1943). Sh .'s work on the meaning of non-specific. metabolic products in life have played an important role in solving the problem of humoral regulation of body functions. In 1947, she proposed an effective method for treating tuberculous meningitis by introducing streptomycin into the spinal fluid. One of the creators and ch. ed. (1935–49) zhurn. "Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine". Honored. Scientist of the RSFSR (1934). Vol .: Blood-brain barrier. M. - L., 1935 (et al.); Immediate nutrient medium for organs and tissues. Physiological mechanisms that determine its composition and properties. Fav. tr. M., 1960.
