Seit 1635 war der Arzt, polyglotte Schriftsteller, Lexikologe, Avisenschreiber und Alchimist für den gottorfschen Hof tätig. Als bedeutendes Handels- und Wirtschaftszentrum bot ihm Hamburg viele Möglichkeiten, wertvolle Nachrichten an den Hof zu liefern. Seine religionskritischen Schriften erregten immer wieder Aufsehen.
