Popkin in which she tells of the growth of great American industries from little packs carried on the backs of Jewish immigrants. " The Odyssey of the pack peddler has not been written," the story goes. "Yet his story is an American epic. He helped to conquer the wilderness. He built trading posts, made peace with the Indians and braved the terrors of the forest." •J "The Dreamer of the Provencal Ghetto," by Michael Ginsburg, deals with the French-Jewish author Armand Liinel and his book "Nicolo Peccavi." Liinel is the Dreamer of the Provencal Ghetto, "the last link in the long chain of generations to whom the homely picture of the Provencal Jewish quarter is not a mere dry-as-dust history, but a real, throbbing, life. "The cruel decades have at last completely destroyed all traces of the peculiarities of provencal Judaism. . . . Only a few synagogues, masterpieces of art, remain to us from the time of the Papal rule." <I Our series of articles on Jewish artists contains one about Isador Kaufmann. <J Henry G. Alsberg has left for Europe and promises us several articles on his impressions of current Jewish movements on the continent.
