France. 23. Visits were paid by Dr. Sokolow and Dr. Brodetsky to Paris, and, with the valued assistance of Monsieur Justin Godart, functions were arranged in connection with the Société France- Palestine. Dr. Sokolow was received by the President of the French Republic, and was the guest of honour at a reception given by the Polish Ambassador in Paris. Visits to Other Countries. 24. Dr. Brodetsky also visited various other countries on Zionist duties, including in particular Switzerland, in connection with certain meetings of the Mandates Commission and of the Assembly of the League, and Latvia, where some aspects of Government action in regard to Zionist wrork had been causing anxiety. In the latter connection a visit was also paid by Mr. L. Jaffe to Riga, when he was received by M. Ulmanis, the Prime Minister. Political Study Commission. 25. Two sessions of the non-Palestinian section of the Political Study Commission, appointed at the meeting of the General Council in Jerusalem in March, 1934, for the study of problems affecting Zionism (consisting of Mr. Blumenfeld, Dr. Goldmann, Mr. Makower, Dr. Schwartzbart, and Mr. Jarblum, with Dr. Brodetsky in the chair), were held in June and October, 1934. In addition to the members of the Commission, Dr. Weizmann, Sir Osmond d'Avigdor Goldsmid, and Mr. Neville Laski, were invited to attend, and were present during a part of the sessions of the June meeting of the Commission, while Mr. Bernstein, of The Hague, Dr. Schmorak and Mr. Dov Hos were present by invitation during some of the sessions of the October meeting. Mr. Ben Gurion, who was in London at the time, and Mr. Locker, also attended the latter meeting. Among the matters discussed w*ere methods of political work, immigration, Arab relations, Arab labour, and land speculation. Very full discussions also took place on the subject of the Legislative Council proposals. 26. In addition to the above meetings informal discussions were held at various times with groups of friends specially convened for the purpose, whose advice on particular questions as they arose would, it was thought, be of assistance. Their cooperation was much appreciated. Political Secretary. 27. Since the last Congress the post of Political Secretary to the Jewish Agency in London, rendered vacant by the resignation of Mr.-L. B. Manier (now Professor of Modern History at the Victoria University of Manchester), has been filled by the appointment of Mr. Arthur Lourie, M.AM LL.B. (Cantab.). 435
