work amounted to £P. 13,500, out of which £P. 7,900 were raised by the W.I.Z.O. in Palestine. 36. By the transfer of the Children's Home in Jerusalem to more suitable quarters, it has been made possible to increase the number of inmates from sixty-five to eighty-five. This institution is the only one of its kind in the country and admits orphans and foundlings up to the age of 2\ years. The contribution from the Central British Fund for German Jewry rendered possible the accommodation of twelve children of German refugees. The classes for training children's nurses in this institute have produced twenty graduates. 37. The centre in Tel-Aviv for mother and infant welfare, giving treatment to special cases and providing accommodation for three. mothers and twelve infants, has admitted fifty-nine mothers and 184 infants during the year. The demand for accommodation, however, exceeded the capacity. This institution trained twenty-two nurses. 38. The W.I.Z.O. supported nine stations for child treatment, some in collaboration with the management of Hadassah. The three stations in Tel-Aviv extended their services considerably, and the aggregate number of visits into these centres rose to 40,260. The number of house visits by nurses amounted to 8,750. The scope of work of these institutions also includes the treatment of pregnant women in accordance with the methods recognised by the Hadassah. In addition to that the W.I.Z.O., in collaboration with the Council of Women Workers, supports day Crèches and five kindergartens for the children of working women. G.—Miscellaneous Institutions. 39. The category of Jewish hospitals supported by charitable bodies includes the following general hospitals : Bikkur-Holim, Shaare Tzedek, and Misgav-Ladach, in Jerusalem. These hospitals render invaluable service to certain sections of the Jerusalem community; the two mental institutions in the " Ezrat-Nashim " hospital in Jerusalem (fifty-six beds), and the lunatic asylum near Tel-Aviv (sixty beds). The work of these two institutions, which give shelter and treatment to 115-120 Jewish mental cases (in the Government's mental hospital in Bethlehem there are between sixty-five and seventy Jewish patients) is worthy of particular mention, for it may be regarded as real rescue work in the light of the appalling conditions caused by lack of sufficient accommodations for mental cases. The two institutions draw their income mainly from patients' contributions and from private donations. The asylum near Tel- Aviv also receives financial support from the Municipal Council and the local community. The total yearly budget of these two institutions is about &¥. 10,000. 426
