benchmakers studied also cement-work, and a group of six people also brickwork. The courses were initiated by the Technical Institute in conjunction with the Association of German Immigrants and the Haifa Workers' Council. Most of those who completed their course found employment in their trade, and earn a substantial wage. The course for building labourers continued for four months, ending at the beginning of September; the course for carpenters continued up to the beginning of January, 1935. In the year 1935 the courses for cement workers have not been renewed as there is no shortage in the building market of skilled labourers. On the other hand the course for building carpentry has been renewed, attended by nineteen pupils, and a course for smelting and corregating (with an attendance of fifteen) has been arranged. The course for carpentry will continue to the end of 5695. The German Department of the Jewish Agency contributed £600 towards the expenses of these trade courses. 12. Extension Service in the Agricultural Settlements. In the summer of 5694 the Haifa Technical Institute, in conjunction with the Colonisation Department of the Jewish Agency and the Organisation of Rural Workers initiated a technical extension service in the settlements of the Valley of Esdraelon and the Jordan Valley. One of the instructors for locksmithery in the Artisans' School of the Technical Institute visits the settlements twice weekly. The instruction in the settlements comprises the following : 1. Systematic visits and advice and instruction; 2. Technical aid in special cases; 3. Vocational lectures; 4. The examination of machines and new implements; 5. The establishment of practical and theoretical courses for mechanics. Every visit continues for two to three hours and is devoted to the discussion of current questions, to the explanation of the required works and to their execution. In special cases and when fundamental reforms are necessary special visits are made. In connection with the systematic visits theoretical lectures are arranged in the evenings on professional subjects to the mechanics in the place. Altogether thirty-seven agricultural settlements benefited from this service. During the period under review the sub-committee of mechanics together with the instructors of the Institute examined new machines in order to establish whether they are suitable for the requirements of the respective settlements. Examination of machines for the sifting of seeds are being continued. Many improvements, as suggested by the Technical Committee, are being introduced into the machinery. In the month beginning January 8th and ending February 8th, 1935, the Haifa Technical Institute, in conjunction with the Organisation of Rural Labourers organised a practical and theoretical course for mechanics in the settlements.
